ASA publishes guidance on environmental claims in fashion advertising
On September 10, 2026, the ASA published guidance on making environmental claims in fashion advertising under the CAP Code.
The ASA said advertisers should clearly explain the basis and meaning of environmental claims, including technical terms such as “sustainable,” and should limit the scope of broad, absolute claims that may otherwise be understood as covering a product’s full life cycle.
The ASA highlighted recent rulings that unqualified “recycled,” “sustainable,” and “carbon neutral” claims were misleading without clear qualification and robust, current, claim-specific evidence, and it noted it takes account of the CMA’s fashion environmental claims guidance.
